The past few years have seen an exponential increase in car electronics, with the aim of making vehicle journeys safer and more comfortable, but also more enjoyable. In particular, this has led to the advent of "infotainment", denoting systems designed for the twofold purpose of information and entertainment. Such systems involve use of multimedia devices such as radios, navigators, telephones and iPods that communicate with each other over a network (CAM, LIN), and protocols such as BlueTooth, using GUI/HMI interfaces and touchscreens, and audio and video codecs.
Multimedia and infotainment are also becoming increasingly ubiquitous in households, thanks to home automation applications aimed at enhancing the comfort and security of residents (e.g. alarm systems, lighting and appliance control systems).
